As you switch from tobacco to electronic cigarettes and your body starts adapting to your new lifestyle, it’s possible to experience a series of unpleasant symptoms. Every person is different, and some of us experience this transition differently, but we’ve put together a list of common side-effects of switching to vaping, just to put your mind at ease that what you’re experiencing is temporary and perfectly normal. So here’s what you might experience when you finally decided to give vapor a chance:
Coughing and light phlegm – as you stop inhaling poisonous smoke into your lungs, your body immediately starts to eliminate all the tar and mucus. It might not feel like it but this is actually a positive side-effect and has little to do with what is in e-liquid, and a lot to do with putting tobacco behind you. The frequent coughing is just your lungs working hard to eliminate all the garbage you’ve been suffocating them with, in the form of phlegm. Studies have shown that coughing usually starts days after a person has stopped smoking, and that the clearing up process lasts up to a month, during which time it’s recommended to consume lots of fluids.
Cottonmouth – also known as Xerostomia, this minor side-effect of using electronic cigarettes is usually associated with e-liquids based on propylene glycol (PG), which is a known humectant (sucks out all the moisture). If you experience dry mouth after you’ve started vaping, try to drink lots of fluids, and if the sensation doesn’t go away after a few days, you might want to try switching to a vegetable glycerin (VG) e-liquid, or at least a mix of PG and VG.
Headaches, insomnia, racing pulse – although they don’t usually occur at the same time, you might experience all of these symptoms when you switch to e-cigarettes. They are mainly associated with the consumption of too much nicotine. Often, when people take up vaping, they seem to overestimate how much nicotine was in the tobacco cigarettes they smoked and underestimate how much of it there is in e-liquid. Because of the high-nicotine intake, you can experience a racing pulse, severe headaches and an inability to fall asleep. The best thing you can do is lower the nicotine level of your e-liquid or just vape less frequently. You shouls know that a lot of vapers experience at least some of these symptoms in the beginning, even with low-level e-juice, mainly because of the difference in nicotine intake.
Hiccups – not the worst thing that could happen but extremely annoying. Hiccups are a side-effect of nicotine making its way into the stomach. A lot of tobacco cigarette users get them frequently when smoking too much in a short period of time, but they do occur when using electronic cigarettes, basically for the same reason. Hiccups are one of our bodies’ natural signals telling us to slow down. Apart from reducing nicotine intake, you should just breath the vapor, instead of keeping it in your mouth and allowing the nicotine to be absorbed in the saliva.
Night Sweats and Diarrhea – These extreme symptoms occur very rarely and are generally associated with an intolerance to propylene glycol. Vapers who experience night sweats or diarrhea after switching to e-cigarettes should try vegetable glycerine-based e-liquids.
These are the most common side-effects of switching from tobacco to electronic cigarettes. Some are more uncomfortable than others but what’s important is they’re temporary and are fully worth the trouble for a smoke-free life.
